Engelbert Humperdinck 的 Too Beautiful To Last

前篇提到, 電影 Papillon 中的插曲 Free As The Wind, 是由 Engelbert Humperdinck主唱。在 芸芸眾多的歐美流行歌手中, 他是我個人最喜歡的其中的一個, 亦是最先列 入為收藏唱片(當年 只有黑膠唱片) 的一個, 當年最先保有的, 是他的一套雙唱片集, 裡面全是他最受歡迎的“飲歌”, 包括 Release Me, Spanish Eyes, Wonderland By Night, Am I That Easy To Forget, Stranger In The Night, Winter World of Love, 及當年每個 Party 都不能少的 The Last Waltz, 不過就是 獨欠一首,  Too Beautiful To Last 是也, 就是這首歌, 令我開始喜歡他的歌。

記得有一次, 在蕭亮(七十年代時, 所有TVB的重要公告, 在背後宣讀的, 就是他的聲音, 據說他 是TVB藝員盧遠及盧大偉的大哥) 所主持的電台節目中, 他播出了 Too Beautiful To Last , 那旋 律及編曲, 深印腦海, 尤其是引子部份, 更像是如夢如幻般的。於是之後四出試圖尋找有收錄那 首歌的唱片, 卻遍尋不穫, 只能寄望有機會從電台節目中再次聽到。在1990年, 阿 Lam 出版的 CD 《十三子祥》中, 其中的一首歌「似夢迷離」, 在過門中的幾小節, 就用上了那引子的一小 段,  編曲者真「識貨」, 好嘢唔怕借來用。呂方在1985年的「新紥師兄」, 與葉倩文在1991年 的「滾滾紅塵」, 中段的過門部份, 有幾小節亦是完全一樣的。

Too Beautiful To Last 是 Engelbert Humperdinck 在1972年所灌錄的, 奇怪的是, 如此優美的 歌, 卻沒有太多歌手再灌錄, 印像中還有 Russ Peterson 及 Kerri Sherwood 而已。最初聽到這 首歌時, 除了喜歡其旋律及編曲, 以當時極「有限公司」的英文, 對歌名摸不著頭腦, 後來得到 「高人」指點, 才知道是「美好光景不長久」之意。
