A Whiter Shade of Pale

前篇提到過 Helmut Lotti 的一隻流行曲DVD, 其中有兩首是經典中的經典流行曲, 一首是 The House of the Rising Sun, 另一首則是 A Whiter Shade of Pale。

此曲是英國的「搖滾」樂隊 Procol Harum 之作, 比 The House of The Rising Sun 剛剛遲了三 年, 於1967年5月, 在英國發行, 四星期之後, 升到英國流行榜的第一位, 並連續停留在榜首位置 六個星期。在美國發行時, 雖然 Procol Harum 並沒有特別的宣傳, 此曲仍然在美國流行榜最高 升到第五位, 在世界其他很多地方, 包括香港在內, 都升到榜首位置的。

此曲還有兩項驕人紀錄: 在全世界能夠賣出超過一千萬張 Single 的歌曲, 不超過三十首, 此曲是 其中之一; 另外, 雖然此曲從發行到現在只有四十六年, 在過去的八十年中, 此曲是在英國的 「公眾地方」(包括商場、餐廳、機場、車站、長途汽車等) 播出次數最多的歌曲、亦是在英國 各電台播出次數最多的歌曲!

此曲最大的特點, 是比一般的流行曲歌較長, 達4分03秒, 但歌詞卻只有兩段, 因為全曲差不多有 一半是純音樂, 在流行曲中是極為罕有的。那純音樂部份, 主要是由電子琴演奏, 非常獨特。更 特別的是, 據說整首歌曲, 都與二百多年前, 「巴羅克」時期的德國作者家 Bach (巴赫) 有關。 有一位古典音樂專家, 經分析之後, 認為此曲中的歌唱部份, 旋律是來自 Bach 的一首教堂頌歌, 歌名當然是德文, 英文意思是 “I am standing with one foot in the grave”; 而電子琴的純音樂部 份, 旋律的來源更複雜: 是來自 Bach 的另一首教堂頌歌, 歌名的英文意思是“Sleepers, Wake!”, 及 Bach 的名曲之一 “Air on the G String” 。

最初認識此曲時, 受制於本身的英文程度, 根本無法理解那曖昧、隱晦的歌詞的意思, 而是被那 像 Organ (管風琴)演奏一樣的純音樂部份所吸引。個人對 Bach 的教堂頌歌作品系列全無認 識, 但認識 “Air on the G String” 的時間, 則與此曲差不多, 不過, 至今仍然感覺不到兩者有甚麼 共同之處, 唯一的是, 兩者都是 G 調的吧。

全曲的歌詞如下:
